OUR RESEARCH INTERESTS

NEURODEGENERATION

We are interested in discovering the biological underpinnings that link epidemiological observations to neurodegenerative disease risk and prevalence.

We are interested in developing techniques that enable earlier diagnostics for neurodegenerative diseases. The earlier a diagnosis can be made, the earlier therapeutics can begin. Theoretically, earlier therapeutics will improve their effectiveness at slowing down or reversing the progressive nature of neurodegeneration.

TELOMERES, SENESCENCE AND AGING

We are interested in telomere dynamics. We have a special interest in exploring the evolutionary mechanisms of their sequence conservation and differentiation across species, the biological significance of their sequences and the interactions between sequence disruptions and length.

We are interested in the role and mechanisms of senescence in the aging brain, especially among glial cells. Senescence in neurodegeneration and the role of telomere dynamics in post-mitotic cells are also of interest. We are currently exploring senolytics as therapeutic agents in neurodegeneration.

TECHNIQUES EMPLOYED IN OUR LAB

We are interested in leveraging bioinformatic approaches, machine learning and other powerful computational strategies for conducting large-scale genomic studies (WGS, GWAS, eQTL, etc.) to study neurodegenerative disease risk.

We use the Drosophila melanogaster model organisms for studying genetics, neurodegeneration, telomeres and senescence.

We use the ONT MinION long-read nucleotide sequencer with in-house generated error correction bioinformatic tools for gathering genetic information.

Our cellular work stations are also outfitted with fluorescence and confocal microscopes.
